The Gift
A graphic narrative that captures the bittersweet journey of a woodcarver’s life.
About the project
The Gift is a graphic narrative that follows the life of a woodcarver in Vijayawada. Living away from his family for years, he feels their absence in every moment. When he finally receives word that they’re coming to visit, his joy is boundless. Yet, their arrival brings him face-to-face with a reality he’s long feared. Will he find the courage to confront it?

Illustrated Storytelling
The illustrations in The Gift are crafted in a life-like style, offering readers an unfiltered view into the complex world of an artisan.

This woodcarver’s mind is in constant conflict—torn between his deep love for his craft and his devotion to his son. He dreads the thought of his son discovering his profession and wanting to follow in his footsteps, yet he can’t help but wonder if his son might elevate the craft to new heights.

Just as hope begins to form, the harsh realities of his practice cast a shadow over his thoughts.
Rendered in black and white, The Gift mirrors the artisan's inner world.
His reality is never simply black and white—there are shades of grey, hinting at the complexity of his struggle.

The process
The process involved multiple visits to the artisan's workshop, where stories flowed over chai and scattered wood chips. Amid the constant rhythm of hammer against chisel, it was the quiet moments between strikes that revealed the true depth of his character.
